MTN MoMo vs Airtel Money at checkout: what shop owners should know

SmarterPOS Team··1 min read

Mobile money isn't a side option in Uganda — for a growing share of customers, it's the default way to pay. A checkout screen that buries it three menus deep, or treats it as a special case, is already behind.

Two networks, one till

MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money dominate the market, and customers tend to have a strong preference for one or the other. SmarterPOS puts both right next to Cash as full-width checkout buttons — not hidden in a settings menu.

At checkout, a cashier taps MTN MoMo or Airtel Money, confirms the customer's phone number, and the till shows a live "waiting for customer" state while the customer approves the payment prompt on their own phone. The transaction reference is captured automatically the moment it clears, ready for reconciliation later — no cashier has to copy a reference number off a phone screen by hand.

Why this matters for reconciliation

At end of shift, SmarterPOS breaks down total sales by payment method automatically — Cash, MTN MoMo, Airtel Money, and Credit — so a manager can see at a glance how much of the day's takings are sitting on mobile money versus in the drawer, with expected-vs-counted cash math done for them.

A note on Credit and Split payments

Not every sale is one payment method end to end. Regular customers you extend credit to can be marked as a Credit sale, and a single sale can even be split — part cash, part mobile money — when that's what the moment calls for.

Mobile money isn't the future of retail payments in Uganda. It's already the present, and your till needs to treat it that way.
